AONE Membership Categories and Eligibility

Full Member

A full member is a registered nurse who:

  • Holds an organizational role in administration/management and is accountable for strategic, operational, and/or management outcomes in a health care delivery setting;
  • aspires to a nursing management/administration position;
  • is faculty in a graduate or undergraduate nursing program, including deans and directors;
  • serves as a consultant in patient care administration/management practice;
  • is employed in a professional association, regulatory agency and/or accreditation health care organization; or
  • serves as editor of a professional nursing publication.

Associate Member
An associate member is a registered nurse who is a full-time graduate student in a relevant degree program with a career path in nursing leadership and is not working.  An associate member may attend AONE business and educational meetings, but may not vote or hold office. For this category, AONE requires a letter from the dean/director of the applicant’s program stating this applicant is attending the program full-time.  Please click here  for a sample letter. 

Student Member
A student member shall be a full-time U.S. nursing student in an associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, generic masters and generic doctoral programs which prepares students for registered nurse licensure.  A student member must be going to school full-time and not working.  A student member may attend AONE business and educational meetings, but may not vote or hold office. Either a letter from the dean of the applicant's school of nursing stating this applicant is attending the program full-time is required or AONE will accept a National Student Nurses Association membership number, as proof.  Please click here  for a sample letter.

Affiliate Member
An affiliate member shall be an individual who is not a registered nurse.   An affiliate member may be an LPN, LVN, or non-nurse professional.  Also, any health care consumer or member of the corporate or political community who is interested in working towards advancement of a health care system driven by the needs of patients is eligible.  An affiliate member may attend AONE business and educational meetings, but may not vote or hold office. The affiliate members’ purposes, goals, and initiatives are consistent with and supportive of the American Organization of Nurse Executives’ purposes, goals, and initiatives.   A Full Member must sponsor an Affiliate Member and the Board of Directors must approve an Affiliate Membership Application.

Retired Member
A retired member is any full AONE member who is retired from the professional practice of nursing, has maintained AONE membership for a period of five consecutive years, and is at least 55 years old.  A retired member is entitled to all rights and privileges of a Full member, with the exception of holding office at the national level.

International Membership
An international member is a professional nurse leader or aspiring nurse leader who is educated and recognized in the country in which he/she practices (other than the United States) with RN licensure or its equivalent and who resides permanently outside of the United States, regardless of national origin. The fees for international membership vary by country and are determined on a sliding scale that is anchored in the World Bank classification based on per capita income. 5-15 members (5% discount) $190/per member
16-50 members (10% discount) $180/per member
51-75 members (15% discount) $170/per member
Over 75 members (20% discount) $160/per member
