    An interactive session will describe cases in which demonstrative evidence was used effectively in the defense of medical malpractice actions and in educational prevention strategies. Examples supporting the effectiveness of strategic planning and visual support for risk prevention care and litigation will be discussed along with the tools to identify the best media for communicating these strategies.

  • WED-03 Hospital Malpractice and Quality: Reducing Delays in Diagnosis and Treatment
    This session will present practical ways hospitals can reduce medical malpractice exposure by integrating utilization management and quality and risk management functions. The approach combines actuarial, clinical and operational methodology, including the results of a risk management/medical management study performed at an urban hospital.

    * Identify opportunities for synergy among risk, quality and utilization management departments to help reduce medical malpractice risk and increase quality of patient care. Analyze patterns of delays in diagnosis and treatment and their relationship to medical malpractice claims. Discuss an expanded view of delays as close calls and the relationship to patient quality.   • WED-04 JCAHO's New Survey Process and Its Impact on Risk Management
    The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has announced a new survey process in which the risk manager will play an important part. At the 18-month point in the organization's triennial cycle, information about patient safety, sentinel events and competency issues (to name a few) will be self-reported. A validation process will occur at 36 months. This session will focus on the JCAHO survey process, risk management "hot buttons" and how to prepare for successful surveys.

    Insurance program renewal has become a challenging and time-consuming process. With medical malpractice severity, loss ratios and underwriter scrutiny increasing, preparation for renewal is of utmost importance. This session will review underwriting, submission and marketing efforts. Participants will review key criteria and timelines for the submission process for all property and casualty lines of insurance. Emphasis will be placed on medical malpractice insurance and marketing.

    * Understand the domestic and foreign underwriting process the criteria for a "good risk" and a "bad risk." Review and analyze key marketing tactics to improve a submission. Review market trends and actions to minimize bottom line shock. Level: Applications/Advanced

  • WED-07 Current Issues in Obstetrics Liability: What's Old and What's New for 2003
    Obstetrics continues to be a high-risk area for liability. This session will provide an update on important issues for risk managers involved in obstetrics. Current liability concerns include Vaginal Births After Cesarean (VBAC), video in the delivery room, new beta strep recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, placental pathology protocols, timing of newborn injury, the professional liabiltiy insurance crisis and how to avoid accidents.

    * Examine the role of the patient safety movement on the labor and delivery unit and discuss how interactions in the perinatal team can help avoid perinatal injury. Discuss the impact of the hard insurance market on obstetrics and what this means for the future. Level: Applications/Advanced
