MORE RISK FINANCING RESOURCES
Regardless of the degree of involvement that healthcare risk management professionals have in risk financing, a working knowledge so that they can “talk the talk” and provide informed insights to the “C” suite can be invaluable.
That’s why ASHRM is developing and providing programs and resources with timely information on risk financing, including online education courses and a new series of monographs.
Online education
ASHRM is updating its career-focused online education offerings with “Risk Financing for Risk Managers.”
In a flexible format to fit any needs and schedules, this progressive five-part curriculum allows participants to learn on their own schedule at their own computer and put new risk financing knowledge to work while they learn.
As an additional incentive, discounted introductory tuition is available through Dec. 31.
The curriculum is being rolled out in five courses:
1. Fundamentals of Healthcare Risk Financing (available now)
2. Principles & Practices of Insurance (available in 2008)
3. Submissions & Renewals (2008)
4. Alternatives in Risk Financing (2008)
5. Enterprise Risk Financing (2008)
The outline of “Fundamentals of Healthcare Risk Financing,” the first course in the curriculum, covers basics including risk identification, risk analysis, risk treatment, risk transfer and contracts.
Completion certificates and continuing education credits are offered for each course. Tuition is established by a contact hour rate. The introductory rate is $79 per contact hour for members (total member’s fee for the Fundamentals course is $158), $99 per contact hour for non-members (total non-members fee for Fundamentals is $198). Effective Jan. 1, 2008, the member rate/contact hour will be $99; the non-member rate/contact hour will be $149.
For details and to access ASHRM’s online education offerings, call ASHRM at (312) 422-3986 or visit www.ashrm.org/ashrm/education/online.html.
Monograph series
A growing number of hospital beds and physicians are insured in alternative risk financing vehicles such as trusts, captives and risk retention groups. In response to this trend, an ASHRM task force is working on a new online resource for ASHRM members that will present “just in time” tools and insights that can be downloaded and printed as needed.
To date, a faculty of more than 30 faculty leaders have agreed to contribute to the monographs series. The first installment is a list of acronyms, definitions and Web sites that may be of particular interest to those who are contemplating the captive feasibility process. The series will debut in early January and be announced in eNews.

ASHRM UPDATE
Members elect new officers
Results of the 2007 ASHRM election of officers have been announced. President-elect for 2008 (assuming the presidency in 2009) is Georgene Saliba. Joining the board of directors in 2008 for a three-year term will be Ann D. Gaffey, Susan Chmieleski and Ben Gonzales. Also, Cindy Shifflett, Cindy Ebner, Faye Sheppard, Diane Waldo and Liz Fragoso each will assume a one-year term on the nominating committee in 2008. They will take office on Jan. 1, when current President Paul Smith will assume the role of immediate past-president.
Emergency Dept. Pearls booklet updated
The Emergency Department presents one of the true high-risk areas of the hospital. ASHRM’s newly updated “Risk Management Pearls for the Emergency Department” booklet is packed with practical tips on how to minimize liability exposures in this challenging environment. It covers risk management and legal issues that medical practitioners may encounter on a day-to-day basis. The pocket-sized, user-friendly format is ideal for sharing with ED staff. To support staff distribution, ASHRM is offering “Risk Management Pearls for the Emergency Department” in specially priced five-packs. Visit the ASHRM Store page for a free preview of the booklet and order online, or call (800) 242-2626 weekdays and request #178573.
Annual report looks at latest liability claims trends
The frequency and severity of hospital claims are at new lows, according to the Aon 2007 Hospital Professional Liability and Physician Liability Benchmark Analysis released in October. The annual report, the most comprehensive look at liability claims in the U.S. health care industry, is published by Aon Corp. in conjunction ASHRM. The study measures 65,689 non-zero claims representing more than $7.7 billion of incurred losses. More than 80 health care organizations representing 1,000 facilities and 90,000 licensed beds contributed to the study. Copies of the analysis can be purchased by calling (800) 242-2626 weekdays and request #178703 or through the ASHRM Store page, where the table of contents also may be reviewed.
ADVOCACY UPDATE
Med reconciliation summit hears risk management insights
ASHRM Board member Sharon Groves on Sept. 25 participated in a panel before invitees to the Joint Commission Summit on Medication Reconciliation. More than 45 organizations were invited to share experience and insights. Groves prepared for the session by reaching out to several risk managers. The insights she gathered and shared included the challenges of engaging physicians, educating patients and documentation, including electronic systems that interface within an organization (e.g., Emergency Department to the medical records system).
ASHRMleaders provide views on disclosure
ASHRM President Paul Smith and Executive Director Elizabeth Summy on Sept. 28 served as reactors to an NQF Safe Practices panel on disclosure during the Texas Medical Institute of Technology (TMIT) Accelerator Workshop held in Washington, DC. ASHRM is an active participant in the efforts organized by TMIT founder Chuck Denham to educate risk managers, clinicians and administrators on the NQF 30 safe practices. New fee structure announced
A new fee structure for certification examinations administered through the AHA’s Certification Center – including the Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) – will go into effect on Jan. 1.
Under the new structure, ASHRM member fees will remain the same but non-member fees will be increased. The new fees will be:
- Examination – $275 member / $425 non-member
- Renewal – $135 member / $225 non-member
Non-members who apply for an examination in 2007 will pay the current amount even if they do not test until after the new structure begins.
Assessment tool available
An online tool is available for preparing for the CPHRM Exam. Created by the AHA Certification Center (the people who created the exam), the Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) simulates the actual exam in format and content. The test offers rationales for correct and incorrect options, as well as several score reports that highlight the exam topics that they scored well in and those that need improvement. For details about the SAE, contact the AHA Certification Center at (312) 422-3713.
