‘'NEW WORLD' AT 2004 ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN ORLANDO
“New World, New Approaches” is the theme of ASHRM’s 2004 Annual Conference & Exhibition. For the latest thinking on patient safety, risk financing, enterprise risk management and much more, Orlando is the center of the world Oct. 17-20.
“ASHRM’s Annual Conference Committee has put together the best, most comprehensive educational and networking program possible – one that meets our strategic commitment to professional development,” says ASHRM President Jeffrey Driver.
Education options
ASHRM’s Annual Conference provides 49 education sessions led by a faculty of 80 health care industry leaders. Sessions will arm risk managers and patient safety officers – as well as quality managers, clinicians, insurance professionals, attorneys and other health care professionals – with information they can take away and apply at their own organizations.
Session topics are labeled according to content level – Essentials, for the beginning risk management professional or someone who wants a refresher course, or Advanced, for the more experienced risk management professional who desires in-depth analysis and study.
Additionally, sessions are organized by topic track – Enterprise Risk Management (new approaches and successful tools to effectively manage risks enterprise-wide), Claims & Litigation (trends in hospital, long-term care, physician liability, and claims management tools and techniques), Risk Financing (concepts for identifying exposures and reducing the total cost of insuring risk), Legal & Regulatory (updates on laws and regulations), Patient Safety (new approaches to improve care) and Special Topics (innovations relevant to a variety of today’s risk issues).
Keynote speakers
The health care industry’s complex new world calls for innovative risk management approaches. Keynote speakers in Orlando will inspire conference attendees to meet those challenges.
Industry strategy expert Dr. Brenda Zimmerman will open the program on Oct. 17 to explain how lessons from chaos and complexity theories apply in health care. As the co-author of Edgeware: Insights from Complexity Science and Health Care Leaders, Zimmerman is an excellent guide to help risk managers identify and develop the skills they need to thrive.
In a complex environment, good customer service can be a key element in controlling loss. Former Walt Disney Co. executive Simon T. Bailey on Oct. 18 will tell how to inspire staff to deliver improved patient care. In his high-impact keynote presentation, Bailey will demonstrate how organizations can reap lasting benefits when they encourage employees to discover their unique purpose and release their brilliance.
Professor Karlene Roberts of the University of California-Berkeley School of Business on Oct. 19 will build on the complexity theories shared by Dr. Brenda Zimmerman and encourage risk managers to understand organizational “high reliability” vs. “low reliability.” The difference between high and low, as Prof. Roberts points out, can mean drastic differences in staff performance, patient outcomes and profitability.
Closing the Annual Conference on Oct. 20, Fred Lee will illustrate how unconventional wisdom can improve patient relations. While a senior vice president at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Lee developed a nationally acclaimed guest relations program. Now as a consultant, he has provided training services to nearly 100 hospitals and written a provocative book titled If Disney Ran Your Hospital: 9½ Things You Would Do Differently.
Networking opportunities
Several networking meals and coffee breaks will be provided during the week. The gala event is the President’s Reception on Oct. 17 that immediately precedes the opening of the profession’s largest tradeshow. This year, approximately 100 exhibitors – many of them new to ASHRM – will demonstrate helpful products and services Oct. 17-19 (exhibition hall doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17).
In addition, ASHRM’s Annual Business Meeting and Member Appreciation Luncheon is set for noon-1:30 p.m. Oct. 18. The president will report on the activities of ASHRM and recognize all volunteers. Another highlight will be a summary of the 2004 membership survey.
On-site amenities
Internet-connected computers at the cyber café will allow conference attendees to catch up on e-mail, confirm return flights and order ASHRM products online for convenient delivery back home. A selection of the latest risk management resources including books, pamphlets and CD-ROM toolkits will be stocked in the on-site bookstore.
The cyber café and bookstore will open at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 and close at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 20. Daily hours will be posted on site.
Prime location
The central Florida city of Orlando is the setting for “New World, New Approaches.” It’s also the home of Walt Disney World, which symbolizes the global power of imagination to create richer lives – a nice fit with ASHRM’s dedication to innovation.
The Orlando area is more than Disney World, of course. It’s a family-friendly paradise with more than 95 attractions, 150 golf courses, 52 million square feet of shopping space and 4,500 restaurants.
Shuttle service will be available from hotels to attractions such as Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Walt Disney World, EPCOT, MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom. Patient Safety Curriculum
ASHRM on Oct. 15 and 16 will present “Basic Principles of Patient Safety,” the initial offering of the first in a three-part Patient Safety Curriculum, at the Orlando World Center Marriott. A faculty of patient safety experts will guide participants in the establishment of a working foundation for safe patient care delivery at their facility. They will explain describe tools to assist in making positive culture changes and suggest ways to break down barriers to culture change.
Participants in the pilot session will enjoy a substantial discount on the registration fee and be able to comment upon the future delivery of the Patient Safety Curriculum. Session I, Session II – “Advanced Principles of Patient Safety” and Session III – “Applications of Patient Safety” will be offered in 2005.
For details, including the agenda, see the insert included with this issue of the Forum or visit www.ashrm.org.
Barton Module
The Modules of ASHRM's Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Program provide a unique overview of health care risk management for the beginning practitioner as well as for those who wish to refresh their skills. The intermediate-level Applications Module expands practical knowledge through in-depth discussions of legal, regulatory and clinical topics.
In Orlando, the Applications Module will be offered Oct. 14-16 immediately before the conference. Scheduled faculty members are Fay A. Rozovsky and Geraldine Amori. For details, visit www.ashrm.org.
CPHRM examination preparation
The interactive Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) credential exam prep session from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday are scheduled to be led by Mary Gutman and Joyce Benton (both with CPHRM credentials). The daylong session will include a continental breakfast, light lunch and a copy of the CPHRM Examination Study Guide (3rd Edition). Registration and breakfast will open at 7 a.m. followed by content review. For details, visit www.ashrm.org.

For details, call (312) 422-3000 or visit www.aha.org.
ASHRM RELEASES UPDATED COMPENSATION SURVEY
Risk management professionals hold a growing array of responsibilities in health care organizations. Results of a new compensation survey published by ASHRM delineate these responsibilities and provide unique insights into the profession and its contributions to safe and trusted health care.
Titled “2004 Compensation Survey for Healthcare Risk Management Professionals,” the report is packed with exclusive data about risk management professionals, their jobs and how they are paid.
Respondents from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands supplied the data via an online questionnaire. Their data are captured in 27 tables and supported with essential analysis. Comparisons are drawn between results of this survey and previous ASHRM compensation surveys. Among the information categories are educational attainment; clinical background; length of time working in current positions, organizations and in health care; decision-making authority; reporting relationships; direct reports; budgets; activities; organization type and scope; current salary and recent raises; bonuses; and fringe benefits.
The intent of the data and analyses in the report is to provide a useful snapshot of the environment in which health care risk management professionals are working that can aid in decisions about employment and compensation arrangements.
Among key findings in ASHRM’s “2004 Compensation Survey for Healthcare Risk Management Professionals”:
* Reflecting an increasingly litigious environment, there is an increase in the amount of time risk management professionals spend on specialized activities such as litigation management and a corresponding decrease in the amount of time spent on general management and administration.
* In keeping with the profession’s rising organizational profile and responsibilities, survey results indicate the number of risk managers’ professional reports is up. Budget responsibilities also are on the rise – to a median expense budget of $500,000 in 2004 (up from $250,000 in 1998).
* The profession continues to be dominated by women, many of whom have been trained clinically as registered nurses. In fact, both the proportion of female respondents and the proportion trained as RNs have increased since the 1998 ASHRM survey.
ASHRM’s “2004 Compensation Survey for Healthcare Risk Management Professionals” can be purchased at (800) 242-2626 or via the ASHRM Web site, www.ashrm.org (Members Services, Tools & Products). The item number is 178852. Prices are $35 for ASHRM members, $55 for non-members.

CHAPTER NEWS
Leadership workshop Oct. 16
Chapter leaders rarely have a chance to network with each other face to face, so the annual Chapter Leadership Workshop presents a valuable opportunity for current and future chapter presidents to find out what other groups are doing and learn more about running an ASHRM-affiliated chapter.
The 2004 workshop will be held 1-3 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort & Convention Center just prior to the start of ASHRM’s 2004 Annual Conference & Exhibition.
The centerpiece this year will be a panel discussion on running a successful chapter, including speakers from chapters both large and small. Also on the agenda are sessions on partnering with other chapters and organizations to plan regional meetings and ensuring a chapter has its financial house in order. In addition, ASHRM Executive Director Elizabeth Summy will deliver an update on ASHRM chapter activities. A question-and-answer session will complete the program.
The event is free and all chapter presidents and presidents-elect are invited. For more information, contact Nancy Neff at (312) 422-3988 or nneff@aha.org.

ASHRM UPDATE
Audio conference covers 2005 JCAHO safety goals
The Joint Commission's Board of Commissioners has approved the 2005 National Patient Safety Goals, which continue many of the 2004 Goals and Requirements. Exceptions are Goal 4 and Requirements 4a and 4b (regarding wrong site surgery), which are now covered by the new Universal Protocol, and Goal 6 and Requirements 6a and 6b (regarding alarm systems) that have been incorporated into the standards. ASHRM’s Aug. 18 audio conference, “Understanding the 2005 JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals,” will cover these changes and their implications for risk managers. On the faculty are ASHRM Past-President Jane J. McCaffrey, a member of JCAHO Sentinel Event Task Force, and Dr. John Whittington, a member of a patient safety collaborative with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). A case study will provide specific insights into meeting the Medication Safety Goals. To purchase a recording of this timely program, visit https://www.krm.com/regonline/hrmvcregs.nsf/hrm8671-0.
