Board set course with Strategy Map

After a deliberate and thoughtful strategic planning process over summer and fall, the ASHRM Board of Directors is introducing a 2003-2005 Strategy Map for ASHRM that identifies three strategic goals and a new mission statement against which progress toward those goals can be checked.

The strategic goals are Professional Development, Advocacy & Representation, and Operational Effectiveness (see the Strategy Map).  As a visual representation of ASHRM activities, the Strategy Map more clearly describes ASHRM’s vision, mission, and work on behalf of its members. Activity in one area, for example Professional Development (education programs), should have an impact on advancement in another area, such as Advocacy & Representation (chapter development).

The Board also recently modified the Mission Statement of ASHRM to recognize the ever-changing field of health care risk management. The Mission Statement now recognizes an approach to risk management that is organization-wide; it also emphasizes that managing risk must be done with a broad view that allows for proactive and innovative approaches to patient safety and risk financing.
Here is the updated mission: “To advance safe and trusted patient-centered health care delivery, ASHRM promotes proactive and innovative management of organization-wide risk.” (The Vision remains “Safe and Trusted Health Care.”)

A key new deliverable of the Strategy Map already is taking shape. The National Advisory Council for Patient Safety comprises thought leaders from a variety of health care interests – from clinicians to consumers, in addition to risk managers. The members will identify opportunities for applying the operational expertise of ASHRM’s membership. The Council held its organizational meeting in late December.

Bringing the Strategy Map and all of its elements together, including the new Mission Statement and the National Advisory Council for Patient Safety, will be 2003 President Jane McCaffrey, Risk Manager, Oconee Memorial Hospital, Seneca, SC.

Joining McCaffrey are new Boardmembers Joyce Benton, Senior Healthcare Consultant, C N A HealthPro, McDonough, GA; Mary Marta, Associate, National Health Law Practice, Epstein, Becker & Green, PC, Washington DC; Sherrill Peters, Director, Clinical Risk Management, Community Health Systems, Brentwood, TN; and President-Elect Jeff Driver, Chief Risk Officer and Director of Regulatory Advocacy and Healthcare, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston.

Completing their two-year terms in 2003 are Board members Monica Berry (2002 President; 2003 Past-President), Vice President, Risk Management & Loss Control, Rockford Health System, Rockford, IL; Ronni Solomon, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, ECRI, Plymouth Meeting, PA; Mark Cohen, Risk Management Consultant, Sutter Health, Sacramento, CA; Michael Seitz, Vice President Risk Management, Minneapolis, MN; and Paul English Smith, Vice President and General Counsel, Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV.

New Patient Safety Council takes shape

To enhance its established leadership in patient safety education and advocacy, the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management has announced the formation of the National Advisory Council for Patient Safety.

Council co-chairs are Eric Knox, MD, retired Director of Patient Safety for Children’s Hospitals and Clinics in Minneapolis, currently consulting in perinatal risk, and Joanne Turnbull, retired from the National Patient Safety Foundation. Members of the Council are health care leaders, clinicians, consumers, educators, risk managers, and other patient safety specialists.

Appointed by ASHRM President-elect Jane McCaffrey on the basis of their first-hand familiarity with the ever-growing body of knowledge and proposed standards and regulations in patient safety, Council members will identify opportunities for applying the operational expertise of ASHRM’s membership and report their findings to the ASHRM Board. The goal is for ASHRM to develop more educational programs, tools and services to promote a culture of safety throughout organizations.

“The risk management profession has always stood for safe and trusted patient care but has not always been recognized for this dedication,” said Ms. McCaffrey. “We practice patient safety through prevention – of medical errors and lawsuits and through process improvement. We always have, and the National Advisory Council for Patient Safety will help ensure that we always will.”

Members of the Council are:

Monica Berry, ASHRM 2002 President; Vice President, Risk Management & Loss Control, Rockford Health System, Rockford, IL

Ellen Barton, ASHRM Past-President and ASHRM 2003 Patient Safety Task Force Chair; Risk Management Consultant, Phoenix, MD
