HRET Director, Research
Location: Chicago, IL
The American Hospital Association (AHA) is the largest national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, their patients and communities. Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET), a subsidiary of the AHA, is seeking an experienced, dynamic individual to work with partners in academia, hospitals and health systems nation-wide to improve the efficiency, quality, and accessibility of health care services.
Business Purpose
The Director, Research will develop and maintain an individual portfolio of research studies and facilitate the strategic development of Health Research & Educational Trust’s broader research efforts. The Director will identify opportunities and resources for new research projects as well as for the dissemination of findings from existing projects to academic and practitioner audiences. S/he will serve as a liaison between HRET and our partners at funding organizations, academic institutions, and hospitals and health systems. The Director, Research will supervise and mentor a research team that consists of junior researchers, project managers and administrative staff.
Essential Functions:

Direct and oversee research projects at HRET from research design to implementation, analysis and product development (40%).

Disseminate and publish research findings and lessons learned to the field. Author technical reports and articles for submission to technical journals peer-review and trade press, issue briefs, and reports. Present findings at conferences and speaking to a variety of audiences in order to advance the work at HRET (30%)

Obtain research funding for new grants and contracts. Investigate grant opportunities, write and develop grant proposals to support sustainability of a research team. Supervise and direct others on the team to develop, write, and submit proposals (15%)

Be an active member of HRET’s management team. Motivate, mentor, and supervise junior research staff. Participate in organization-wide operational and develop efforts, attend staff meetings and retreats, and participate in association-wide research efforts (15%)
Qualifications
This position represents an outstanding opportunity for an established health services researcher to build a research portfolio in an environment where the emphasis is to take research to action. Qualified candidates will have:

A doctorate in a relevant field (sociology, psychology, public health, health administration, public policy) with a focus on health care organizations and other health services research.

5-to-10-year track record developing and managing research and evaluation projects, obtaining grant funding, managing budgets, supervising junior research staff, and directing national-scale grant projects. Experience in a research organization, state or federal government, or a think tank is highly desirable.

Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills demonstrated with a track record of authorship of peer-reviewed articles, products for wider distribution, and presentations at professional meetings.

Knowledge of health care delivery issues relevant to hospitals and health systems is highly desirable.

Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills in building and maintaining working relationships with external researchers and practitioners.

Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and handle timelines and priorities in a team environment.
This position will include limited travel.
